My thoughts on "Wives with Beehives".

It's a small world after all...actually, it really is.  Did you get the chance to watch TLC's newest "reality" (and I'll use that term loosely) show, "Wives With Beehives"?  It premiered last night, however I was spending time with my family at the Holiday Bowl to catch the beginning of the episode, so I missed the first 15 minutes.

Did you watch it!? I did!
However, Derek is pals with Dollie (the show's token mean girl, thanks to the producers) and her husband, Zack.  I've never really had the opportunity to spend a lot of quality time with the couple, other than meeting at Viva Las Vegas this past April, when Dollie embraced me in a big bear hug.  And a run in at Tiki Oasis.  Both seem like real nice people.  They are the rockabilly subculture's epitome of the Joneses.  Great hair.  Great house.  Great in general.  Derek also sold Shelby's mom (owner of Vintage Suits By Mary) a rattan couch and a kidney shaped, 2 tier, formica coffee table.  And I was in talks with Amber about having her and her band play here in San Diego a while ago (I never persued it, because I stepped away from show promoting).  However, neither of us knew who Leslie was until the show came around.

But after watching this episode and reading poor Dollie's Facebook posts on how they played her out to be a monster, I felt really bad.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but to judge someone you don't know based on TV is something completely different.  The hateful words that I saw my own friends post on Facebook about the entire show made me cringe and want to find a rock to hide under.  I tried to reply diplomatically as best as I could, hoping to give some light to who the people in front of the camera really are.

Then it dawned on me, it's jealousy.  It's sort of like...well, wanting something you can't have.  Like how the guy you are all gaga over is dating that one girl who isn't you.  Well, this is the same thing.  How the network chose a group of people for a TV show about something you are head over heels for and unfortunately, you weren't one of them.  Deal with it.  Move on.  As I told Dollie when she began getting her first pieces of hate mail, just tell them "jealousy is a sickness, get well soon bitches".  And I mean it.  Get over it.  Don't assume you know these girls, just because you watched an hour of their life pieced together by a group of editors that are just looking for ratings.  They want you to hate someone, feel sorry for someone, identify with someone, and think that someone is pathetic.  Job well done, TLC.  You got what you wanted, while putting people's real, everyday lives on the line and making them feel like crap while you were at it.  Goal acheived.  Bravo!

So Dollie, Zack, and the rest of the crew, chin up.  You all looked great on camera and you got your well deserved 15 minutes of fame.

Until next time, lovelies!

Good call!!! I guess I have been giving people too much credit in terms of their sophistication in understanding the motives of media. In truly thought most people understood that reality is anything but real. Editing is a key piece, but so is the obviously forced scenarios in which they they put the cast. These women opened themselves to love, scrutiny, and extreme criticism - which is a lot more than most people are willing to do. I knew them before the show and I will know them after and be proud to call them my friends!

I agree!! There are some jealous broads all over the SD area, thats for sure, and they've been talking smack for months!! All the while trying to sneak in and make an appearance on the show. Now they are talking even more smack all over Facebook. Its lame.
